The history of the order
Based on a historical overview, it is stated that the origin of Freemasonry dates back to a period known as ancient/legendary, in the mid-5th century BC, beginning with the construction of the Temple of Solomon. Following this period, the medieval/operative and modern/speculative periods are also noteworthy.
Associations of artisans, working in the same professions, were founded by the Collegia Fabrorum of the Roman Empire during the medieval period. In Germany, similar entities were called “GUILDS”. The main objective of these groups was to entrust the secrets of the professions to a select few, after a long period of apprenticeship.
Thus, the Freemasons of the legendary and medieval ages are considered operative masons, due to the manual labor that many performed in the construction of palaces, cathedrals, mausoleums, and bridges, while intellectual work was carried out by only a few.
However, with the decline in cathedral construction during the 17th century, many guilds of manual laborers began to accept learned citizens as members, labeled as “accepted masons.” This marked the beginning of the modern period, in which Freemasonry took on a speculative character.

This evolution is considered the beginning of the Masonic Order, as it is known today. In 1717, the first Grand Lodge in the world was formed through the union of four Masonic Lodges in London, England. From then on, other Lodges and Grand Lodges came to be recognized in many countries.
Freemasons often refer to Freemasonry as an “Ancient Institution,” considering that its foundation in tradition dates back to historical origins built over time, sometimes unrecorded and unknown.
The Masonic force is composed of a selection of members chosen from all segments of the social organization, united by the noblest common ideals of humanity, without distinction of race, color, or creed.

Freemasonry in Brazil
Although there are no reliable historical records regarding the first Masonic Lodges in the country, it is believed that Brazilians who pursued higher education in Europe influenced the establishment of Masonic Lodges, initiating them with political objectives focused on social causes of the time, such as the fight for Brazilian independence. In 1822, Masonic activity took on a solid form in the country, and this historical trajectory of the fraternity is detailed in informational materials available in libraries and bookstores.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is a philosophical, educational, philanthropic, and progressive movement that embraces the pursuit of truth in a state of complete freedom, comprised of free thinkers who appreciate moral culture.
His teachings are imparted through the practice of rituals, which contain principles from all Initiatic Arts , such as Hermeticism, Kabbalah, symbolism, as well as traditional concepts about colors, numbers, and ancient legends.
These rites merge the symbolism of Primitive Initiations with the Rosicrucian teachings of ancient philosophers, Pythagoreanism, the Templars, Judaism, Christianity, among others. There is also a dedication to preserving ancient traditions of mystical-initiatic teachings (symbolic and allegorical).
In short, Freemasonry is a school of wisdom.
Their fundamental mottos are
Freedom – because the man who has conquered himself frees himself from the oppression that enslaves him.
Equality – because Freemasonry recognizes that all men are born equal, admitting only distinctions regarding merit, talent, wisdom, virtue, and work of each individual.
Fraternity – because Freemasonry aspires for understanding to reign among its members, diminishing the ills of nations and increasing understanding and respect among men.
